Some of the most frequently asked questions about a 100% tobacco-free school policy concern enforcement. This means determining the enforcement strategies for students, staff and visitors; the consequences of violation of policy; and the people who will have responsibility for enforcement. A key to successful enforcement is the development of a detailed and comprehensive enforcement plan – one that outlines strategies for communicating the policy to students, school staff, students, and visitors, identifies consequences for policy violation and outlines enforcement roles and responsibilities. Effective policy communication is also critical. School districts that take steps to ensure the policy is communicated consistently, and in a positive manner, find that enforcement is more likely to be successful.
The Tobacco-Free Schools Program provides school districts with the tools, training and technical assistance to develop and successfully enforce a 100% tobacco-free school policy. Resources offered include the opportunity for an on-site enforcement in-service, instruction on developing an enforcement plan, free signage to school districts that adopt a 100% tobacco-free school policy, event announcements to use at athletic and other events, and tips on communicating the policy.
